Visiting The Troops at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba
Added on 4/13/2010 11:09:42 AM

Back in October 2009, I received a phone call from a man by the name of Craig Basel. Craig is the man in charge of the Morale, Welfare and Recreation division (MWR) of the Guantanamo Bay, US Naval Base in Cuba (GITMO).  Craig invited me to visit the base, host a fishing tournament, and spend some time fishing with the troops on the ground. Not having been back to Cuba since my family fled Castro's revolution in the early 60's, I was thrilled to have this opportunity to visit the land of my people! We rallied to get a crew together and before I knew it, I was boarding a Navy plane out of the Boca Chica in Key West and heading for Cuba!

To read more about my GITMO adventure, and to see a GPS track of our trip, visit my SPOT Adventure Page.

Sailfish and Marlin in Isla Mujeres Mexico
Added on 4/7/2010 11:09:42 AM

A trip from Key West, Fl to Isla Mujeres Mexico, across 400 miles of open water with at the time prototype Mercury Verado 300 horsepower motors and the very first 39 foot Sea Vee ever built.  We made this trip in search of Sailfish and White Marlin that frequent the area.  Jose Wejebe, Ariel Pared, John Caballero, and Mike "Sparky" Torbisco made the epic voyage that took 13 hours and rounded the tip of Cuba before arriving on this small island of Isla Mujeres, just off the coast of Cancun.

Then And Now!
Added on 3/1/2010 11:09:42 AM

We recently shot a Spanish Fly show with a young Florida Keys guide by the name of Will Benson.  Very much like myself, Will began fishing the waters of the Florida Keys at a very young age and would later become a full time flats guide.  As we spent our time fly fishing for bonefish and permit we shared stories of how we both got started in our fishing careers.  Here are a few pictures of Will and I now, and then.
