Many of you have questions about Shimano's new Thunnus spinning reel. What's different about it and what makes it better than the old one? Simply stated it is BAD ASS... But for those of you that want the skinny, here are a few key differences and the spec sheet that I got from Shimano.
First, Shimano focused on changing the overall weight of Thunnus from the older model...they used the CI4 materialto lighten it up. It is still very durable, but is much lighter and smaller than the old. Focusing on braided line, they changed the drag material to the new Dartainium II drag washers. With these drags, you will basically get all the drag you have ever wanted, not Stella 20,000 settings, but ample drag for Thunnus applications. Shimano also changed the Baitrunner (freespool) drag. Freespooling is now more precise and has a wider range for different sized baits.
This reel also features Shimano's Paladin Gear Durability Enhancement...basically better gearing for more torque and heavy drag settings. The Thunnus also sports the propulsion line management system and Propulsion Spool Lip, basically a tapered spool lip for greater casting distance and braid handling. It handles Power Pro better than any other spool design on the market. Last, although this has nothing to do with performance, the color of this Thunnus is absolutely gorgeous!
Below is the product sheet i got for the new Thunnus.
