"FKCC Shark Repellant" - Grassy Key, Fl
Florida and also at the Florida Keys Community College is where Dr. Patrick Rice is working with both students and sharks to find a chemical repellant that protects humans from sharks! It was found that putting a shark in a trance like state (tonic immobility) one could perform surgery on even large dangerous sharks. Anything that can wake them up from this state is a candidate for a good shark repellant!

In Key West, what happens when you mix blood and guts, wahoo and sharks, in the wintertime? Well, down here, we go swimming!

This is the time of year that we spend a fair amount of time close to the edge of the reef just off Key West. Most of the inshore water is cold, but the warm offshore waters of the Gulf Stream move in closer.

Madfin Shark Tournament
The Madfin Shark Tournament created quite a buzz last year and recently we got done filming the 2nd season complete with helicopter aerial, boat and underwater cameras. Madfin is an all release tournament where basically the sharks try to bite you and you have to treat them nice as you release them!

Journey to the Galapagos
This year while shooting the shows, the crew and I departed on what would be a trip of a life time to the remote islands of the Galapagos. The Galapagos are an archipelago of volcanic islands situated near the equator about 1000Km off the coast of Ecuador. These geologically young islands are best known for their pristine natural environment and vast number of endemic species which led to the inception of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. The islands and their surrounding waters have been protected as a national park and marine sanctuary since the 1960s in an effort to maintain their pristine natural condition.

Shark Repelling Magnet Research

In the Florida Keys at the Marathon Aquaranch, Dr Patrick Rice conducts a series of experiments that show how sharks are repelled by magnetic fields. His Research in this field shows how shark repellants can be used to protect the sharks themselves!
